Mittelwiehre
The heart of the Wiehre around Annaplatz square and its little Anna Chapel - grown from the remains of the medieval village of Adelhausen.
Mittelwiehre is the spatial and social heart of the Wiehre, running roughly from Hilda- and Quäkerstraße to Günterstalstraße, along which tram line 2 connects the quarter to downtown and Günterstal. Its central landmark is Annaplatz square with the so-called "Annakirchle," the former monastery church of St. Cyriak and Perpetua. The foundation stone was laid in 1753 and the small hall church consecrated in 1755, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings in the Wiehre and the nucleus of the quarter rebuilt after the demolitions of the 17th century. Address books have used the square's name since 1900, after Anna von Sölden, the first prioress of the Adelhausen convent.
To the west lies the Loretto quarter around Lorettostraße, which climbs toward the Lorettoberg hill. On its crest stands the Loretto Chapel, completed in 1657 as a replica of the Santa Casa di Loreto and a popular vantage point over the city. In the north, the Protestant Christ Church on Maienstraße dominates the view. Otherwise, dense Wilhelmine-era architecture with stucco façades prevails, much of it owner-occupied and mixing homes with small shops, cafés and restaurants such as Banoi Kitchen, Freiburger Kaiser and Café au Lait. Today Mittelwiehre is a sought-after, upscale residential area with lively ground-floor uses and short distances to downtown, the Stühlinger district and the Black Forest foothills.
