Annaplatz
The village-like heart of the Wiehre - the Anna Chapel, the Sebastian fountain and a meeting point between Mittel- and Unterwiehre.
Annaplatz forms the historic center of the Wiehre and lies at the end of Kirchstraße, where it meets Lorettostraße. The square owes its name to the Annakirchle, the little Baroque church of St. Cyriak and Perpetua, whose foundation stone was laid in 1753 and which was consecrated in 1755. Its design and construction go back to Johann Baptist Häring and Joseph Schauberger. A predecessor stood on the same spot but, like the surrounding village of Adelhausen, was demolished during the sieges of the 17th century to clear a field of fire for Freiburg's fortifications. Until the Johanneskirche was completed in 1896, the Annaplatz church served as the parish church of the Wiehre.
Today the square is defined by the Anna Chapel, Wilhelmine-era corner buildings and the Sebastian fountain with a figure from 1731. Adjoining streets such as Günterstalstraße, Lorettostraße and Kirchstraße channel pedestrian and cycle traffic between Mittel- and Unterwiehre. Cafés, small shops and a playground make Annaplatz an everyday meeting point in the quarter; once a year it hosts the "Annaplatzhock" neighborhood festival.
The square is reachable via tram line 2 toward Günterstal at the Lorettostraße stop, just a few steps away. From Wiehre station a walk of about ten minutes leads to the square via Günterstalstraße.
