District No. 423
Unterwiehre-Nord
Between Günterstalstraße and the Dreisam river - Freiburg-Wiehre station, the Christ Church and the transition to the Old Town.
Unterwiehre-Nord (city district 423) is the western part of the Unterwiehre, reaching south to the line of Loretto-, Christoph-Mang- and Basler Straße, east to Günterstalstraße, and north to the Dreisam river, which separates the quarter from the Old Town. Historically the area belonged to the former village of Adelhausen and, like the rest of the Wiehre, was built up into a middle-class residential quarter during the economic boom of the mid-19th century. Wilhelmine-era town villas and apartment buildings dominate, interspersed with churches such as the Christ Church and the Catholic Johanneskirche on the edge of Mittelwiehre, which because of its size is nicknamed the "Wiehre Cathedral."
The transport hub is Freiburg-Wiehre station, which since the tunnel solution of 1934 runs beneath the Lorettoberg and today serves the Höllental railway, linking the quarter with downtown and the Black Forest. The old station building houses the municipal cinema, a literature center and a café - a cultural meeting point for the Wiehre.
Day to day, bakeries such as Wiehrgefühl, small eateries and the short walk to the Dreisam riverbank shape the quarter. Bridges at Kronenstraße and Sandfangweg connect Unterwiehre-Nord to the Old Town and the Oberau district; despite its proximity to the railway and the expressway, the quarter stays quiet and largely residential.
