Schloss-Café Lorettoberg

A café in a 1902 Art Nouveau building on the Lorettoberg - breakfast until 3 pm, homemade cakes and a terrace overlooking the Freiburg basin.

The Schloss-Café sits at Kapellenweg 1 on the Lorettoberg, the southwestern rise of the Wiehre, and is one of the district's most tradition-rich places to stop in. The Art Nouveau building was erected in 1902 as the "Gasthaus Lorettoberg" and originally served as a hospice and pilgrims' lodge for visitors to the nearby Loretto Chapel. Between 1903 and 1905 it was converted into today's café; it remains owned by the church foundation Breisgauer Katholischer Religionsfonds. A comprehensive renovation preserved the historic fabric and kept the building's Art Nouveau character.

By day the kitchen focuses on breakfast and simple lunch dishes - breakfast is served until 3 pm, supplemented by homemade cakes, a vegan porridge bowl with oat milk and classics like spaghetti aglio e olio or schnitzel with Brägele (Baden fried potatoes). Espresso comes from the barista, milk is organic, and plant-based alternatives are available. On Friday and Saturday the house stays open until 10 pm; Tuesday and Wednesday are closing days. On foot the café is about twenty minutes from the Wiehre via the paths on the Lorettoberg, past the Loretto Chapel of 1657. The terrace, with its view over the Freiburg basin as far as the Kaiserstuhl, is the main draw in summer; cyclists will find parking right at the building.
