Oberwiehre

The eastern part of the Wiehre around St. Johann (the "Wiehre Cathedral"), Maria Hilf and the Old Wiehre Station. Wilhelmine-era villas and quiet residential streets.

Oberwiehre stretches from Hilda- and Quäkerstraße in the west to the neighboring district of Waldsee in the east. The quarter is defined by its Wilhelmine-era villas, apartment buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and calm residential streets that have been carefully renovated and gently infilled over the decades. Two churches mark the skyline: the neo-Romanesque Protestant Johanneskirche, consecrated in 1899, and the neo-Baroque Catholic Maria Hilf church, completed in 1929. The cultural heart is the Old Wiehre Station on Urachstraße, which today houses the Kommunales Kino (municipal cinema), a gallery and a café.

Traffic runs along Schwarzwaldstraße, the main artery toward downtown and the Höllental valley, and along tram line 1, which links the quarter to Littenweiler and Landwasser. Freiburg-Wiehre station on the Höllental railway offers regional connections toward Titisee and Donaueschingen. To the east lies the Sternwald forest, a close-to-town recreation area with trails along the foothills of the Schlossberg.

Everyday shopping centers on the Zentrum Oberwiehre (ZO) mall on Schwarzwaldstraße, which combines grocery stores, restaurants and specialty shops. The Oberwiehre-Waldsee residents' association represents locals to the city administration and organizes neighborhood festivals and cultural events.
