Cemetery
Old Wiehre Cemetery
A disused cemetery of 1830, now park-like - the neo-Gothic Dortu mausoleum marks the Baden Revolution of 1849.
The Old Wiehre Cemetery lies at the corner of Erwinstraße and Dreikönigstraße in the Mittelwiehre, a few minutes' walk north of Wiehre station. Around 1830 the cemetery of the then-independent municipality of Wiehre was moved from Annaplatz to the "Oberfeld" and remained in use until 1923. After its closure, the city turned the grounds into a green and memorial space; part now serves as a playground, while the rest, with its old trees and paths, stays open to the neighborhood.
At its center stands the neo-Gothic mausoleum for Maximilian Dortu, a young lawyer from Potsdam who was shot by Prussian troops on 31 July 1849 as a participant in the Baden Revolution. His mother had the burial chapel built at her own expense and endowed the city of Freiburg with 1,000 guilders for the grave's permanent upkeep. Together with the memorial stone for the freedom fighters Friedrich Neff (Rümmingen) and Gebhard Kromer (Bombach), executed the same day, the mausoleum forms the only surviving memorial to Freiburg's revolutionary victims of 1848/49.
An "Initiative to Remember the Baden Revolution" holds an annual commemoration here. The grounds are freely accessible; the nearest tram stop is Holbeinstraße (line 2), and it is about five minutes on foot from Wiehre station via Günterstalstraße.
