Church
Maria Hilf
A Catholic parish church of 1929 with a distinctive roof turret and onion dome - a modified Baroque in the regional "Heimatstil."
The Catholic parish church of Maria Hilf at Schützenallee 15 was built from 1927 to 1929 to plans by the architect Bernhard Müller-Ruby, who had previously worked for Beuron Abbey. Stylistically it shows a modified Baroque in the then-popular regional "Heimatstil." Its signature feature is the roof turret with an onion dome sitting at the center of the roof, which gives the building its Baroque note. The church was built on the former "Böhringer estate," which the parish acquired in 1927; the classical manor house became the rectory, while the barn and stables were converted into a parish hall. Archbishop Karl Fritz laid the foundation stone on 20 November 1927, and consecration followed on Easter Monday 1929. The predecessor building opposite is now known as the Maria-Schutz chapel.
The interior was furnished step by step: font (1939), high altar (1940), side altars (1941), pulpit (1942) and choir stalls (1943). Among the most valuable pieces are two Baroque altarpieces - the "Assumption of Mary" by Jacob Carl Stauder (1717) and the "Adoration of the Magi" by Heinrich Lihl (1747). The organ was built in 1935 by the Mönch workshop in Überlingen, and the bells cast by Friedrich Wilhelm Schilling in 1953. Today Maria Hilf belongs to the Wiehre-Günterstal pastoral unit in the Archdiocese of Freiburg; a new parish hall was completed in 2019.
The church lies in the Oberwiehre quarter on Schwarzwaldstraße, a few minutes' walk from Wiehre station. The tram lines along Schwarzwaldstraße stop close by. Check current service and opening times before visiting.
