Freiburg-Wiehre Station

An active station on the Höllental railway / Breisgau S-Bahn (S1) - a feeder for commuters and Black Forest day-trippers.

Freiburg-Wiehre station lies at Türkenlouisstraße 20 (79102 Freiburg), on the southern edge of the district between Mittelwiehre and Oberwiehre. It opened on 8 November 1934, when the Höllental railway was rerouted south out of the Wiehre to remove the many level crossings in the quarter. The associated Sternwald (302 m) and Loretto (514 m) tunnels were built as part of this realignment. The reception building is a plain structure in the style of the early 1930s; the Old Wiehre Station on Urachstraße - today home to the municipal cinema - remains visible as the predecessor site.

Today the station is a stop on the Breisgau S-Bahn along the Höllental railway toward Kirchzarten, Titisee and Neustadt; from Titisee the S1 continues via the Dreiseenbahn to Seebrugg. Electric Coradia Continental trainsets run on behalf of DB Regio. Between the main station and Wiehre the line is double-track, after which it is mostly single-track. With the commissioning of the electronic signal box in December 2019, the station became the control center for large parts of the regional S-Bahn network; in the same upgrade it was made barrier-free with ramps.

For commuters and Black Forest day-trippers the station is an important feeder. The nearest tram stop is Lorettostraße (line 2), a few minutes' walk away; bicycle parking and a taxi rank are available on site. Check current timetables and services before traveling.
