Augustiner im Bankepeter

A traditional tavern on Schwarzwaldstraße - known as the "Bankepeter" since the 1930s, with Augustiner since 2002. Hand-scraped Spätzle, Brägele and Schnitzel Sunday.

The Augustiner im Bankepeter at Schwarzwaldstraße 93 is one of the oldest tavern addresses at the transition between Unterwiehre-Nord and the Oberau. The name goes back to the Freiburg restaurateur Peter Bank; as the Bankepeter the place has been known since the 1930s. In 2002 the Augustiner, previously located elsewhere, moved in here, and both traditions have been run under one roof ever since.

The menu features Baden classics: hand-scraped Spätzle, Brägele (fried potatoes), house-baked bread, schnitzel and changing seasonal dishes, rounded out by regional wines and beers. On Sundays there is a schnitzel day with various versions, including a vegetarian option. The atmosphere is homely and rustic, and the clientele mixes long-established Wiehre residents with regulars from the neighboring quarter around Schwabentorring and the Dreisam riverbank.

It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 5 pm (hot food until 9 pm) and Sundays from 11:30 am; Monday is the closing day. Since hours and prices can change, a quick check before visiting is worthwhile. Anyone seeking the traditional Freiburg tavern will find here one of the few remaining addresses that does without a staged concept and simply lives off a long-standing regular clientele and its location between downtown and the Wiehre.
