Outdoor pool
Loretto Lido
Germany's oldest family outdoor pool, with the country's only women-only bath - at the foot of the Lorettoberg since 1886.
The Loretto lido at Lorettostraße 51a in Unterwiehre-Süd lies at the foot of the Lorettoberg and is regarded as Germany's oldest family outdoor pool. The facility was founded by Johann Nepomuk Stadler as a cold river bath, originally a men-only garden pool. In 1886 a separate women's area was added - this women's bath, screened by walls, hedges and changing cabins, survives to this day and is the only remaining women-only outdoor pool in Germany. Alongside it is a family pool open to men and mixed groups.
The water traditionally came from the Hölderlebach stream flowing through the grounds. Today a stainless-steel pool is used, warmed solely by sunlight without additional heating - so the water temperature depends heavily on the weather. The pool is therefore open only in the summer season, usually from mid-May to mid-September. Several times each season the "Friends of the Loretto Lido" association hosts the concert series "Klassik im Damenbad"; at these public concerts male guests are exceptionally admitted to the women's area too.
The lido is easy to reach by public transit: tram lines 3, 4 and 5 stop nearby (Weddigenstraße and Reiterstraße stops), and it is about ten minutes on foot from Wiehre station. Check current opening times and admission prices with the operator, Regio Bäder, before visiting.
